Emotion is often frowned upon at work. When individuals are “emotional” at work they are frequently seen as irrational and out of place. We propose a new way to think about, and leverage, emotion at work. Emotion is energy. Emotion is tightly tied to motivation and engagement. When we learn to tolerate, understand and embrace emotion at work, we can utilize it as motivation to meet new challenges “head on.” Workplaces that promote a culture of safety and understanding are able to harness the energy of emotion to increase satisfaction and productivity at work.
