Resilience is better medicine

Building Organizational Resilience: Lessons from a Three-Year Partnership

Organizations across high-pressure industries continue to invest in Employee Assistance Programs, workplace wellness initiatives, and clinical mental health services. Yet many still face rising stress, burnout, and mental health-related absences.

One reason is that many traditional supports begin after employees are already struggling.

AIR helps organizations move upstream by building practical mental fitness skills before challenges escalate. Through proactive learning, leadership development, personalized insight, and coaching, organizations can strengthen resilience across every level of the workforce.

For the past three years, AIR and NB Power have been putting this approach into practice—building a connected mental fitness strategy designed to support employees, leaders, and the organization as a whole.

Building Resilience Through a Connected Ecosystem

Building organizational resilience requires more than introducing another standalone program.

AIR and NB Power have built a connected mental fitness ecosystem that continues to evolve alongside the organization’s needs. Different supports provide different pathways for employees and leaders to develop practical skills, deepen their understanding of resilience, and access more personalized support when needed.

The ecosystem includes:

  • BrainGym: Digital mental fitness practice that supports practical resilience skill development.
  • PowerHours: Interactive learning experiences that introduce and reinforce mental fitness skills.
  • MasterClasses: Leadership development focused on strengthening resilience across teams.
  • SpringBoard: Personalized resilience assessments that identify individual strengths and opportunities.
  • Resilience InsideOut Coaching: One-on-one coaching tailored to individual goals and challenges.

Together, these supports help employees access the right support at the right time—from developing everyday resilience skills through BrainGym and PowerHours to receiving personalized guidance through SpringBoard and Resilience InsideOut Coaching.

Building Capacity Over Time

Organizational needs don’t remain static, and neither has the partnership.

Over three years, AIR and NB Power‘s work has evolved from foundational learning and digital mental fitness practice to a broader ecosystem incorporating leadership development, personalized resilience assessments, executive sessions, and individualized coaching.

Rather than introducing standalone programs, NB Power built a connected mental fitness ecosystem that strengthened resilience over time.

This layered approach has also helped create a shared language around resilience and continues to embed mental fitness into the culture of the organization.

Sustained Engagement Across the Organization

Over the course of the partnership, engagement has taken place across multiple AIR programs and levels of support.

AIR and NB Power have delivered:

  • 16 tailored sessions across PowerHours, MasterClasses, and Executive Sessions
  • 4,697 total session attendances across PowerHours, MasterClasses, and Executive Sessions
  • 521 hours of BrainGym activity
  • 22 SpringBoard assessments
  • 113 resilience coaching sessions
  • 3 years of continuous partnership across learning, leadership development, and personalized support

Together, these numbers demonstrate sustained participation across multiple forms of mental fitness support—not simply engagement with a single initiative.

The Impact

Scale is one part of the story. The experiences of the people participating help show what that support meant in practice.

Across AIR’s programs:

  • 100% of Resilience InsideOut participants found coaching sessions very helpful.
  • 100% of Resilience InsideOut participants found BrainGym helpful or very helpful.
  • 98% of participants in a PowerHour found the session relevant and timely.
  • 88% of MasterClass participants reported a better understanding of why emotions matter in leadership.

The qualitative feedback provides another view of that impact.

One Resilience InsideOut participant shared:

“This was my first experience of this nature and it opened my mind to the benefits… [my coach] was always very positive and engaging.”

A MasterClass participant reflected:

“My biggest takeaway is learning to understand emotions and recognizing that they can be powerful tools.”

These experiences reflect the value of creating multiple pathways to mental fitness—from organization-wide education and leadership development to digital practice and individualized support.

Creating Change at Every Level

The partnership was designed to strengthen mental fitness across employees, leaders, and the organization as a whole.

For employees, that has meant opportunities to develop practical mental fitness skills through ongoing learning, digital resources, and personalized coaching, with different levels of support available depending on individual needs.

For leaders, the work has helped create a shared language for discussing stress, resilience, and mental fitness across teams while strengthening their ability to have more informed conversations about these topics.

At the organizational level, NB Power has developed an integrated mental fitness strategy that has evolved alongside its needs—embedding resilience into learning, leadership development, and individualized employee support.

What Other Organizations Can Learn

NB Power‘s experience demonstrates an important principle: organizational resilience isn’t built through a single program.

Resilience develops over time. Building mental fitness as an organizational capability requires sustained attention rather than one-time intervention.

Different people need different forms of support. Digital skill-building, group learning, leadership development, assessment, and individualized coaching each serve different purposes within a connected strategy.

Mental fitness can be proactive. Rather than waiting until challenges escalate, organizations can give people practical skills and resources that help them navigate stress and pressure earlier.

Building resilience is an organization-wide effort. Supporting employees, leaders, and the broader organization through a shared strategy creates multiple opportunities to strengthen mental fitness across the workplace.

Looking Ahead

Building organizational resilience is an ongoing process.

As the partnership continues, AIR and NB Power are expanding this work by further integrating mental fitness into learning and development and the organization’s broader health and wellness strategy.

The goal is not a one-time initiative, but a connected approach that continues to evolve alongside organizational needs.

For organizations thinking about the future of workplace mental health, the opportunity is to move beyond simply responding when people are already struggling and begin building the skills, systems, and supports that help strengthen mental fitness over time.
